The Vatican has approved the beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman, the English convert and theologian who has had immense influence upon English-speaking Catholicism. At his beatification ceremony later this year, John Henry Newman will receive the title “Blessed.” He will need one more recognized miracle to be canonized. That is enough for me. The important words for me are "The Vatican has approved" So a cause for great rejoicing you would think? Yes indeed, but not in all catholic blogs.
Accusations of not much of a cultus following, questioning his influence upon Catholic life and piety, very objectionable and frankly false claims about his lack of smiling and friendliness and suggestion's about inappropriate close male friendships (Written by people who you would expect better of!) Why this negative reaction when "The Vatican has approved his beatification" Who are we to cast slurs after such extensive investigations have taken place by more informed people?
Not much of a cultus? Well what about Praise to the holiest in the heights? Lead kindly light? these influence the popular perception of Catholics surely? Newman's Poem "The dream of Gerontius" what a wonderful exploration of Purgatory and the soul, very much making it part of Catholic consciousness. And great prayers such as:
God has created me to do Him some definite service; He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another. I have my mission - I may never know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next. I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons. He has not created me for naught. I shall do good, I shall do His work; I shall be a preacher of truth in my own place, while not intending it, if I do but keep His commandments and serve Him in my calling. Therefore, my God, I will put myself without reserve into your hands. What have I in heaven, and apart from you what do I want upon earth? My flesh and my heart fail, but God is the God of my heart, and my portion forever.
May God support us all the day long
till the shadows lengthen
and the evening comes
and the busy world is hushed
and the fever of life is over
and our work is done -
then in mercy -
may God give us a safe lodging
and a holy rest
and peace at the last.
These and more prayers and writings have influenced popular catholic piety and continue to do so. No popular Cultus....... what about these English saints what do we know about their "Cultus"

As for hints about his sexuality and his personality what a disgraceful slur to make (One blogger also says that Hurricane Katrina was sent by God as punishment for immoral behaviour in the city! Quite frankly a disgusting viewpoint. His suggestion of an inappropriate friendship can be dismissed just like his Hurricane theories))
Cardinal John Henry Newman is to be beatified the church has said so. I for one am delighted.

The comment that Fr Mildew deleted on his bog made by me went something like this.
In his post Fr Mildew says he has a problem with Newman's Beatification, he goes on to say that he did not think Newman was a homosexual but......I said but what? (The but says it all)
He then states Newman had no sense of humour and fell out with those around him....I asked where he got his evidence for this?
I explained politely that his negative reaction went against the findings of Rome.
He deleted my comment saying I made a personal attack...what utter rubbish! I made no personal attack I guess the truth hurts!
His whole post is a scandal and a slur. Rome has not got a problem with Newman but the likes of Mildew sneering and criticising do.
Deleting my comment was a real childish thing to do.
I just expressed something similar too,on his comment section.I expect it will be removed post haste!
I think he's gone to ground! Can you please help out over on Fr Ray's blog..or can I use yr post here to publish?
I just don't get the Newman bashing.
Especially now when better informed people than me have declared that all is right to proceed with his beatification.
His cause is a chance to rejoice and an event to look forward too in the Year for Priests, and the Oratory look like they did just that judging by the pictures and good on them. Why should we not celebrate.
As for those who are choosing this time to cast slurs in his direction well too bad, and I guess they have another agenda.
Lead kindly light.......
What if he was gay? He was ordained and therefore celibate so in my book not an issue. Dunno the truth on that but if Rome deems him worthy of Beatification then I don't see what the problem is. His sexuality is irrelevant in my opinion. I think the hurricane priest just wants his 15 mins personally. He's an idiot and does the Church a real disservice. I pray his opinions don't make it to the lectern on a Sun morning
I have to say their behaviour is despicable..the worst I've seen on blogs & I've been running one a few years now. I might continue on my own..but as you say it should be a celebration. Fr Ray leaves me speechless!
Jackie, it would appear that leaving you speechless is what has happened all your comments on that blog have been deleted!
What I find sad is that some of these guys set themselves up as an authority on all things to do with the church. They parade their opinion as if it were fact. When it it is pointed out to them they claim they are being bullied or personally attacked and by deleting comments they sow confusion.
The outrageous slur on Newman in their posts needed to be challenged because they were ill informed and what they have printed is frankly untrue. In laymans terms they were speaking out of their back sides!
Blogging is about opinion and I am all for that. But when opinion is presented as fact then I start to wonder.
Catholic Chris says"What if he was gay? He was ordained and therefore celibate so in my book not an issue".
True Chris, but the Priest's post in question suggested he was maybe in a homosexual relationship with his best 'friend'.
If this were not a Catholic Priest speaking, maybe it wouldn't be as horrifying(although still a terrible sin),but to calmly slander a dead fellow Priest, then announce he is off to Lourdes!!! I hope Our Lady boxes his ears!
Sorry Fr Pat! It was moi who deleted them..I just didn't want to be on his blog..perhaps I shouldn't have..but really! I replied to that Tom person telling me to keep an open mind & just let rip! Hence the hysterical references..btw Fr R sent me some e-mails crap they were too!
I know a few priests who were grateful to you yesterday!
It was another who had deleted my comment on his negative and awful slur on Newman. Since then the whole of his post has gone!
Our Lady wouldn't allow it(the post),not with her name involved(the mention of Lourdes). She crushes snakes heads,I'm tellin ya,keep on her side! I wouldn't want to upset her!
Anyway,I do wish the Priest involved a good pilgrimage.I offered my communion for him yesterday. Our Lady loves him too!
As a recently returned to the faith Catholic,I get frightened when we knock each other in such a way.We have enough attacks from outside the Church.
What do you think of my latest post?
